Legacy League - Win a mox
08 Jan 2010 | Adam Douglas
For those that don’t know I am Buster “Adam” Douglas or zeepug on the forums, I have participated in the legacy league for the entire 10 weeks with the same deck each time. I also managed to win the Mox.
Originally I saw the deck played in a top 8 at GP Chicago and as I really like playing these colours I thought I would make the deck up and it helped that I already had most of the cards. Here is that list:
Original deck:
The Rock
A Legacy Magic deck, by Brian Kowal
5th place at a Grand Prix tournament in Chicago, Illinois, United States on 2009-03-08
As reported at http://www.deckcheck.net/print.php?event=Grand+Prix+Chicago2009++-+Top8+Decks
Main deck:
3 Sensei’s Divining Top
4 Dark Confidant
4 Mesmeric Fiend
4 Tarmogoyf
3 Tombstalker
4 Dark Ritual
4 Swords to Plowshares
4 Hymn to Tourach
4 Thoughtseize
4 Vindicate
1 Plains
1 Swamp
4 Bayou
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Scrubland
4 Wasteland
4 Windswept Heath
Sideboard:
4 Engineered Plague
4 Pernicious Deed
3 Extirpate
4 Duress
It is basically a discard deck that focus’s on disrupting the hand of the opponent and dropping a threat until they deal with it then doing it again. The deck isn’t inherently insane, but it is a consistent deck that relies on the pilot to know what they want to do, and playing the opponent instead of the deck the opponent is playing. Of course this doesn’t always happen and there are a few decks that you really don’t want to see across from you.
I have played the same deck- B/W/G pimp(As you can tell the name is different even thought the deck is pretty much the same, the reason for this as most of my opponents and friends know is I try to get foils of cards in my deck, currently over 50% foil, and when the deck list went up the first time, the name B/W/G Pimp was created.) as know on the deck lists, the entire time and have only made a few small changes depending on what I thought the metagame was each week. Here is the deck and a few of the changes I have made:
My Current list:
B/G/W Pimp
Main deck:
4 Tarmogoyf
4 Dark Confidant
4 Mesmeric Fiend
3 Tombstalker
4 Vindicate
4 Thoughtseize
4 Hymn to Tourach
4 Swords to Plowshares
4 Dark Ritual
3 Sensei’s Divining Top
4 Scrubland
3 Bayou
3 Verdant Catacombs
3 Marsh Flats
2 Windswept Heath
1 Forest
1 Swamp
1 Plains
Changes to the main deck:
Originally the list had only Bloodstained Mires and Windswept Heaths but with the new sac lands, I adjusted the sac land base to this configuration. Also I originally has 4 Bayou and no Forests, this changed at the same time as the sac lands and the fact I was coming across more non basic land hate.
Sideboard:
3 Pernicious Deed
3 Extirpate
3 Yixlid Jailer
3 Engineered plague
3 Kitchen Finks
3 Duress
The first 9-12 cards are always in my board, the original list had 4 plague, 4 duress, 3 and 4. I originally played plague and duress, and then swapped the duress’s for finks as zoo/burn was a bit more prevalent and I changed the deck back to duress’s for week 9 and 10.
One of the reasons for the finks, is I was trying to work out a way to survive against zoo and burn, finks does the job best, serves as a blocker, sometimes twice, and you gain some life off it as well.
Here are a few options when boarding:
Against Canadian thresh:
-2 Swords
-4 fiend
+ 3 duress
+3 Extirpate
You want the discard earlier and for the cards to go to the graveyard for the extirpates, which go especially well with the wastelands/vindicate as a possibility to remove an entire colour from their deck.
Zoo/burn
If you have finks these match ups are slightly better, if not, well hope for the best as they are hard ones. Zoo -3 fiends, +3 finks/deeds, burn, +3 duress/finks for the 4 fiends and 2 vindicates
I have had a lot of questions regarding fiend over sculler due to a 2/2 is better than a 1/1. First, come on a horror is a better creature type than zombie and second(the main reason) you can’t cast a sculler on the first turn with a dark ritual, also the fact that fiend is less painful on the mana base when playing with lands that sometimes not produce white.
I have a few details from the weeks in the league and the metagame from some of those weeks although I can’t remember most of what happened I can give a few thing that happened, and not necessarily in chronological order.
Revealed a tombstalker off a bob after topping eot.
Lost to a 10 year old girl
I don’t think this happened in an actual game, but had a first turn tombstalker and 2nd turn bob and hymn
extirpated a tropical island and forced my opponent to only have the one forest-vindicated it and a dryad abor(didn’t see) left for green against Canadian thresh.
Played a first turn Thoughtseize, Dark confidant and a mesmeric fiend
Won against zoo after hitting tombstalker, still lost the match though

WEEK 9 report:
Round 1: Tim Burke playing u/g back to basics, stile/nought, counter/top deck.
Game 1 I win on 1 on 1 with a bob on the table
Game 2 Tim wins. He casts a counterbalance and hits the cards 4 times blind.
Game 3 I screw up on turn 3 or 4, I eot look with top, then draw my tombstalker and draw from top to get the land a saw, to play around a third daze (that I don’t know if he has) draw the vindicate, not the land, somehow know he is going to daze it, play the stalker and yep daze….. game then goes on for another 15-20 turns and then he wins, if I managed to resolve the stalker I think it would have won, as I never saw anything that could have dealt with it.
Round 2-Victor playing Faerie Stompy
Game one he casts a chalice on 1, doesn’t faze me and I get down a large goyf or 2 which finish him off
Game 2 he gets the nuts and I can’t race it
Game 3
At the end of this round I hear that Tim and Justin have been paired against each other, and Justin won game 1, almost time and Tim wins game 2 for the draw WOOT!
I then play against Paddy-merfolk
win 2-0
I then hear that Tim drew with Mackenzie and Justin lost to Petr.
round 4 I get paired against Justin
he wins game 1
Game 2 I cast a thoughtseize early and hit goyf of which I extirpate it, I manage to resolve a bob, when around 6-8 life I hit a land and cast stalker which resolves, Justin comments nice order which it was! I end up going down to … but Bob lets me live to win.
Game 3 I have a goyf down on turn 2 and in his turn he wastes my bayou, then in my turn 3 when I attack for 2 he tries to cast submerge for free on my goyf, I show my lands-scrubland and swamp-nope no free spells for you so goyf goes a way. I then later use a sac land to search he hard casts he submerge on goyf, I fetch a forest cast goyf and then extirpate the submerges, later the goyf is about to go in for the win, I draw extirpate, choose fire/ice, and he has one in hand-game and match to me.. WOOTAGE
I find out that Petr is now by best friend in legacy, he beat Tim in round 4 which puts me in the lead for week 10 9 points ahead of both Tim and Justin. I now only need 4 points to guarantee the mox.
Week 10 Report:
Round 1-Petr with sui black discard
Can’t remember much about the match, played a bob, and a tombstalker which got there.
Game 2 I mulled to 5. Petr played a first turn pithing needle naming marsh flats; I didn’t have any sac lands in hand, and drew a catacombs, played it. Next turn he played another needle, in response I sac’d the catacombs he then named catacombs, then he played a 3rd needle naming top.
I played a thoughtseize see a snuff out and a nyxalid take the lid. Swords a stalker eventually draw a goyf and extirpate the snuff out, I hit a 2nd in hand and cast the goyf, and it gets there.
Round 2-Mackenzie with Robert Smith
Game 1, can’t make out much, I went to 10 then beat him down.
Game 2 lost to playing top instead of seize.
Game 3 I turn 1 a bob & fiend-skyshroud cutter. This stops the false cure, he has a first turn kavu predator, I trade the bob for something and when he attacks with the predator which I choose not to block with a 4/5 goyf and I go from 13 to 1. at this point and eot he sacs a sac land and he draw a might of old krosa for the quiran ranger he attacks, I check how big the goyf is and realise that the sac land made it to a 5/6 he goes crap, I go crap, its worked out that neither me or him realised the goyf was bigger til after he attacked so we can’t do anything, I block and then win in 2 turns after drawing another goyf.
Round 3-Addison playing rock
I lose the dice roll, he plays a bayou. My turn 1 is a little more nuts, I play a land 2 rituals, a thoughtseize and fiend and a bob. I see a grim discovery, 2 finks, a deed, a wasteland, plus something else I discard the something else and fiend the deed.
After that turn, he really isn’t in it I swords and seize both finks and win.
Game 2 is more of the same-ritual into duress and bob, take a extirpate he draws a few finks I extirpate 1 with the trigger on the stack and beat down with a stalker.
Round 4- Justin playing Zoo.
Game 1 I get a turn 1 bob and fiend which take 1 of 2 wild nacatls leaving a sylvan library and a goyf in hand and some lands, he plays the 2nd cat I swords it and start the beats. I get down a goyf and attack he blocks it with his own, I then cast a stalker to kill both, and it finishes the job.
Game 2 & 3 I lose pretty handily they go for a awhile but I don’t get anything of substance to stick and he takes me down.
So after only needing 4 points in the last week, I received 9 which sealed me the mox for the league.
The legacy league was heaps of fun; the prizes were worth it just for the weekly prize and to play for a mox as the grand prize was awesome.
This deck is one of my all time favourite ones, it plays with some of the best cards in the game and some of my personal favourites if I had a choice between playing it and another deck, I would choose this every time.
