Making The Most of Your Magic Money – To Buy, Or Not To Buy – That Is The Question

05 Apr 2010 | David Li Wang

“To buy, or not to buy– that is the question:
Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The junk and cards of outrageous fortune,
Or to wait for the Scars of Mirrodin
And, by waiting, beat them.” – Hamlet (Now playing Magic and pondering whether to buy Rise of the Eldrazi booster boxes or wait, and beat up his friends with his artifacts from the Scars of Mirrodin).

Without a doubt from the cards spoiled so far, Rise of the Eldrazi looks like a unique set, especially for limited and will be great fun to play, hopefully. However, many people are faced with the question of whether it is worth buying a booster box or not. To help answer that question, I’ll ask you what format do you play a lot.

1. A) Limited – Certainly worth buying ROE if you play limited a lot because this set is going to be heaps of fun to draft and play sealed with, with friends.

B) Standard – There are definitely a few goodies for standard and sharing a box or two with friends to get some cards will be a great idea if you’re not a regular drafter who drafts for his staple cards.

C) Extended – ROE will be a lot less tempting to buy if you play Extended all the time, but there a few cards that will make Extended decks.

D) Legacy/Vintage – Not really recommended buying ROE.

E) EDH – If you think EDH is the format where some really high costed cards can be played and crazy things can be accomplished, then ROE is certainly worth buying for you if you share with friends.

Ok then so the next question is, are you sick of playing the Zendikar/Worldwake limited format?

2. A) Yes – You don’t even need to think. Just buy! This set looks to be the polar opposite of Zendikar’s limited format.

B) No – If you like playing in a fast format with 2 mana 2/1s and hate fatties, ROE is not for you. However, if you’re not sick of Zendikar and Worldwake’s limited format because you just love drafting and playing sealed in general, still think about buying ROE.

Do you have enough spare cash to buy a box?
3. A) Yes – Then you should be buying a box for sure. Don’t hesitate
B) No- Obviously you can’t buy one but you can if you have friends who are willing to share with you.

Hopefully you’ve made up your mind. The chance of cracking some awesome mythics in ROE should also be very enticing and there are quite a few awesome ones. Anyway I can tell you Rise of the Eldrazi probably won’t be as good value and profitable as a Zendikar Booster Box, but it won’t be bad at all and is 100% not going to disappoint you if you draft it with friends(assuming you like unique experiences).
